How Tough are NES Games?

I released a new video last night! I was inspired to test the endurance of NES games through a series of tests after reading this article about a Japanese gamer who subjected her copies of Street Fighter II to three different endurance tests. Watch to find out how tough those little NES cartridges really are!

YouTube is not a fan of this video, so you'll hear a couple of blips in the audio that weren't in the original file. It's kind of sad because JOT worked so hard on the audio, but it's hard to complain too much about a free service. JOT picked out all of the music except the Super Mario RPG piece, "Forest Maze", and "Still More Fighting" from Final Fantasy VII. They're both personal favourites of mine!

I know some people have voiced concerns about how horrible it is to destroy something old and irreplacable, despite its relative abundance. I just want to let everyone know that I didn't do the video and then throw the games away. They're now a valuable part of my collection and a testiment to their hardy design:

They have a really comfortable perch beside some other relics: my one and only famicom game, Adventure Island, which was actually purchased from France; my Saint Seiya Happy TV (which is like a cheap viewfinder), an anime I've never seen before but I've held onto this strange device since high school; and my Coca-Cola Lulu which was given to me by an old friend who spent some time in Japan. Oh, and I can't forget my Sega Genesis games! I even kept the pieces that broke off, you can see them sitting on top of the stack :)

  1. Hey, just wanted to say that I re-watched a few of your earlier videos, and I think you've really improved my only pick-y point, which was that your speaking voice seemed very slow and precise. In this video you really seem more at ease and natural with your speaking, and it really makes things much better. I guess you're loosening up? Anyway, well done.

  2. Thats pretty extreme to be destroying them like that haha, okay maybe not that extreme. But What if a game never works. Something has to cause a game to not function after time. Me and My friend bought a copy of battletoads a while back, and We could never get it to work. Even with alcohol or the wiggle technique. Even after days of trying! So we returned it and luckly the store had another copy. Thank god, To bad you gotta be god to beat this game. D= anyways, Happy gaming.=D

  3. Thank you!

I always talk slow and carefully by default: I've done a lot of work with young children and tutoring English as a second language. But, I recognized that the voice overs sound better when I speak faster, so now I'm always thinking "talk fast!!" when recording! I'm happy to have improved, even if its just a little bit :)

Of course NES games break all the time! I actually didn't expect all of those in the video to survive, it was a complete surprise! I have one NES game that just won't work... I've since taken it apart and examined it, but I can't really find anything wrong with it. That's electronics for you! I also have an NES Advantage controller that doesn't work.

  5. Wow, great video guys! I've been following your stuff since you were featured on Retroware TV and I can honestly say you're as good as anyone when it comes to making videos about videogames. Your work is very original and entertaining!

Have you guys considered posting your videos on a Blip.TV account like Retroware TV and That Guy with the Glasses does? You guys deserve to be making some ad revenue with work of this quality!

PS - I love how you shout out Canada!

  6. Thanks so much ^^

We have thought about posting on Blip, but we don't have anywhere to showcase our videos. Since we're not on a site like TGWTG, YouTube is the best option for now because it reaches the largest audience. We're all about just getting the stuff out there for now!

  9. Great video. I was always amazed at the durability of the old cartridge based system. My NES/Genesis survived untold amounts of abuse with nary a complaint. (Though sometime you would have to blow the NES to make it work. Insert boyfriend joke here.)

    Keep it up.

  10. Proving that old games are more resilient than their current-gen counterparts, have I got a story for you.

One day, messing around outside near my front door in some pretty miserable summer weather (I live in Newfoundland, so it's not TERRIBLE), I crawled under my porch for some reason I can't quite remember. Underneath, tucked away in some grass, I found an intact Sega Genesis copy of Mortal Kombat. I cleaned it up, dusted it off, and it worked perfectly.

Just goes to show that cartridges are pretty much bad enough dudes to rescue the president.

  14. Found it on kotaku as well. Hilarious.

Problem is, while the games seem to take a lot of abuse, I have an old SNES and Mega Drive in the closet where the wiring is complet crap and barely works. :(

  15. Wow. Thanks for the support everybody! I'm happy to have made something so many people enjoy!

    @Evadrion
LOL @ Bad Dudes reference ;)

    @Green Ninja
Yea... to be honest, the Genesis I had as a kid broke when my sister stepped on it...

  16. I got here from Kotaku as well.

Just wanted to applaud you on an awesome, well-made, and very watcheable video!

Also, you have the cutest voice ever :D

  17. That's pretty damn awesome. You should do a follow up "Mythbusters style" with the non failing games, and see how long they have to be buried in snow to stop working and how many cars have to run them over and whatnot. It would be awesome!

  18. Great video but something about it made the inner child in me cringe a little bit. Watching that helpless cartridge fall from that buliding was horrible. haha

    ReplyDelete
  19. Haha... yea. I was very relieved when they had almost all survived :D

  20. Showing some Canadian lovin is always great! Fantastic video! I can't believe the things that those little cartridges can go through.

The original gameboy carts are extremely resiliant to destruction as well. Those things are like little bricks! I once used one to even out one of my bed posts, and after a few years tried it out, and it still worked flawless :p

  21. @Desfunk
OMG! That poor Gameboy :p That IS pretty impressive, though!

  22. I think They forgot to put the game in a microwave...it would have been a nice touch...

    Good video..NES games are tough!

  23. @Toonleap
Yea... I don't have a microwave and couldn't find anyone to volunteer theirs for the experiment..

  26. WOW, awesome stuff you've got here :-D Fantastic video, great sense of humor couched in that good ol' Canadian politeness (that's a good thing) ;-)

One small complaint (very small) the text goes by a little too fast. I suppose you did this in the interest of brevity, and the pause button renders this little caveat useless. So, yeah, very small, lol...

  27. It appears that Nintendo went to great lengths to reduce damage to the cartridges. Which is somewhat unusual considering the amount of problems the original NES's ZIF connector caused.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's impressive how all of them still worked to some degree. That is one reason why cartridges are still little champs, despite the fact that the N64 lost to the PS1 because of the outdated format. I don't really have many problems with discs, though, except the ocassional Xbox 360 "this disc needs to be cleaned with a cloth" message. Plus, I think it's very practical for a format to not have to rely on an internal battery that can eventually dry out. That's one of the worst things that can happen. :(

Also, has anyone ever told you that your voice sounds somewhat like Ginger from the cartoon "As Told By Ginger"? XD

  29. Hey Rinry,
Loved the video. Saw it on GT as the User Vid of the week! Congrats! I was extra entertained to see the EC Weather for Halifax, and then again when the Halifax Shopping Centre Parking garage was used. Great stuff. I live in Dartmouth and love seeing our city showcased to the world! haha.

Anyway, I once found Super Mario Brothers 3 and Tetris cartridges in an apartment building that had been all but destroyed by fire. The games were slightly melted and very wet when i found them. Worked perfectly though!

    Long Live NES.

Hey, I'm happy you liked it! I love getting feedback from fellow inhabitants of the HRM :D

Oh, and that's amazing about those NES carts... too bad I couldn't pull that stunt for the video!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nice video. You should do the same tests with seven disc-based games and see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Bayshun

Yea... maybe I'll do that, but it will be far in the future :) If I ever stumble upon 10 copies of Gran Turismo for the PS1, it will definitely happen.

  33. Rinry

Great video, I'm sure your traffic has spiked since Gizmodo posted your video.

I'm sure one day soon you'll find 10 copies of something PS1 for $1 - $5 each, or how about donations? With the popularity of your video I'm sure you could get 10 free copies in a few days of asking for it. Keep up the great work with your blog, bookmarked!

  37. I saw your video on Youtube. That's pretty amazing. I can't believe that after what they had to endure most of the games still work... Seems like our good ol' cartridges were tougher than current CDs, huh? :D

  38. Hey Rinry, you mentioned that stacking disks horizontally in their cases causes them to blow. What do you mean by that (and does the same apply to DVD's?)

Generally your mineral line should be saturated at around 9 minutes unless you are Zerg and already expanded early Runescape Gold. Expand when your opponent is playing defensively or has already expanded themselves and you have not done so yet.
